Savannah State University Opens Groundbreaking STEM & Esports Lab
Locale: UNITED STATES

SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 31, 2026) - Savannah State University (SSU) today officially opened the doors to its groundbreaking new STEM & Esports Laboratory, a facility poised to redefine the university's approach to education and student engagement. The lab represents a significant investment in the future of SSU students, combining rigorous science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education with the rapidly growing world of competitive gaming.
The newly unveiled laboratory isn't simply an addition of gaming consoles to a science building; it's a fully integrated space designed to bridge the gap between traditionally disparate fields. Equipped with cutting-edge hardware and software, the facility offers students hands-on experience with technologies crucial for success in a wide array of 21st-century careers. From advanced data analytics platforms used in esports strategy to virtual reality simulations for engineering design, the lab aims to provide a truly immersive learning environment.
"This lab is a game changer for our students," stated Dr. Maria Jackson, Dean of the College of Science and Technology, at the opening ceremony. "It provides a unique and immersive learning environment that will inspire them to pursue careers in STEM fields and beyond. We're not just teaching concepts; we're fostering practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for innovation."
The integration of esports isn't arbitrary. SSU recognizes the growing esports industry - projected to reach over $1.8 billion in global revenue by 2026, according to Newzoo - presents unique opportunities for students. The lab will support a competitive esports team, but more importantly, it will allow students to explore career paths within the industry. These include game design, programming, broadcasting, event management, data science (analyzing player and team performance), and even sports psychology related to peak performance in competitive gaming.
SSU President James Peterson emphasized the strategic importance of the facility. "We are excited to offer our students this exceptional opportunity," he said. "This initiative aligns with our commitment to providing our students with opportunities to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. We believe this lab will be a catalyst for attracting both talented students and highly qualified faculty to Savannah State."
The $2.5 million project, a collaborative effort between the College of Science and Technology and the Department of Athletics, was funded through a combination of private donations - largely spearheaded by alumni passionate about both STEM and gaming - and targeted state grants aimed at bolstering technological education. The university is actively pursuing further partnerships with industry leaders to provide internship opportunities and guest lectures for students utilizing the lab.
Beyond the direct benefits to SSU students, the lab is also envisioned as a valuable resource for the Savannah community. The university plans to host workshops and training sessions for local K-12 students, introducing them to STEM concepts and the possibilities within esports. This outreach program aims to cultivate a pipeline of future STEM professionals and gamers, strengthening the local talent pool.
Several local school districts have already expressed interest in partnering with SSU to provide their students with access to the lab's resources. The university also plans to offer professional development courses for teachers, equipping them with the skills to integrate technology and gaming into their classrooms.
The opening of the STEM & Esports lab signals a broader trend in higher education - the recognition that traditional academic silos need to be broken down to prepare students for the complexities of the modern world. By combining STEM with the dynamic and engaging world of esports, Savannah State University is not only providing its students with valuable skills but also fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and future-focused learning. The university expects to see a measurable increase in enrollment in STEM programs over the next three academic years, and anticipates that the lab will become a defining characteristic of the SSU educational experience.
