Petco Park Boosts San Diego Economy by $1.2 Billion
Locale: UNITED STATES

SAN DIEGO, CA - March 29th, 2026 - A recently released economic impact study confirms what many San Diegans already intuitively knew: Petco Park isn't just a baseball stadium; it's a powerful economic engine driving over $1.2 billion in annual economic output for the San Diego region and sustaining more than 13,000 jobs. The comprehensive report, commissioned by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (SREDC) and meticulously prepared by the Anderson Economic Group, provides a detailed analysis of the ballpark's multifaceted impact, reaching far beyond the ticket gates and into the broader San Diego economy.
This isn't simply about the money spent at baseball games. The study dissects the economic activity into three crucial categories: direct, indirect, and induced impacts, offering a granular understanding of how Petco Park's influence ripples through the local economy. Direct impacts represent the immediate revenue generated by the stadium's operations - salaries paid to ballpark staff, spending on concessions, and ticket sales. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Indirect impacts are equally substantial, encompassing the economic activity of businesses that supply goods and services to Petco Park. This includes everything from food and beverage providers, security companies, landscaping services, and maintenance crews to the manufacturers of merchandise sold within the stadium. The report highlights a significant network of local businesses that rely on Petco Park for a substantial portion of their revenue, creating a robust supply chain that supports regional employment.
Finally, the induced impact captures the spending of both employees working at the ballpark and visitors drawn to San Diego as a result of the stadium. These individuals spend money on lodging, dining, entertainment, and transportation throughout the region, further amplifying the economic benefit. The Anderson Economic Group found that this induced spending is significant, contributing substantially to the overall $1.2 billion figure.
"Petco Park is a vital asset to our region, attracting visitors and generating economic activity throughout San Diego County," stated Jerry Sanders, President and CEO of the SREDC. "This report validates the importance of investing in our key infrastructure and demonstrates the power of sports and entertainment to drive economic prosperity."
William Anderson, principal of the Anderson Economic Group, elaborated, "We've found that Petco Park generates $1.2 billion in economic output annually, which is equivalent to approximately 1.4% of the region's Gross Regional Product. This isn't a trivial amount; it's a substantial contribution to the overall health and well-being of the San Diego economy." He further emphasized the employment figures, noting the park supports over 6,400 direct jobs and an additional 6,700 indirect and induced jobs.
Looking ahead, the report also delves into the potential economic benefits of planned renovations and improvements to Petco Park. With discussions underway regarding potential upgrades to seating, concessions, and fan experience amenities, the SREDC is optimistic that these enhancements will attract even larger crowds and further bolster economic activity. Proposed projects include updated premium seating areas, enhanced technological integration for fan engagement, and improvements to surrounding infrastructure to facilitate smoother pedestrian flow and reduce traffic congestion.
These potential upgrades aren't solely focused on attracting baseball fans either. The SREDC and the Padres are exploring opportunities to host a wider range of events at Petco Park throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and large-scale conventions. This diversification strategy aims to maximize the park's utilization and generate revenue even during the off-season, turning it into a year-round economic driver.
Sanders concluded, "We are committed to ensuring that Petco Park remains a vibrant and dynamic asset for San Diego. We will continue to work with the Padres, the city, and the community to identify opportunities to enhance the fan experience and maximize the park's economic impact." The long-term vision is to transform Petco Park into a premier destination for both sports and entertainment, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of San Diego's economic future. The SREDC intends to use the findings of this report to advocate for continued investment in the ballpark and to attract additional events that will benefit the entire region.
