Variety Donates $50,000 to Cedar Rapids Library for Adult Accessibility
Locale: UNITED STATES

Variety's $50,000 Gift to Cedar Rapids Library Signals Growing Focus on Adult Accessibility
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - March 30, 2026 - Variety - the Children's Charity, traditionally known for its support of children with disabilities, is broadening its scope with a significant $50,000 donation to the new Cedar Rapids Public Library. The funds are specifically earmarked for enhancing accessibility features for adults with disabilities, a move that experts say reflects a growing national awareness and demand for inclusive public spaces beyond childhood.
The donation will directly contribute to the purchase of adaptive technology, specialized furniture, and crucial staff training, ensuring the library - slated to open in April - is a truly welcoming and usable space for all members of the Cedar Rapids community. Library Director Mary Jo Trzecinski hailed the gift as a pivotal step in achieving that goal.
"This generous gift from Variety will help us ensure that our new library is a welcoming and usable space for all patrons, including adults with disabilities," Trzecinski stated. "We've prioritized universal design principles throughout the new building, but this funding allows us to go above and beyond, providing specialized tools and support that will genuinely empower our adult patrons."
While Variety has long been a champion for children with disabilities, this investment marks a noticeable expansion into adult accessibility. Michelle McIntee, executive director of Variety, explained the reasoning behind the shift. "For years, we've focused on helping children reach their full potential, and we will continue to do so. However, we recognize that the need for accessible resources doesn't end at childhood. Individuals with disabilities require ongoing support throughout their lives, and public libraries play a critical role in that support system."
This contribution isn't just about providing equipment; it's about fostering a more inclusive community. Experts in disability advocacy point to a significant gap in accessible resources for adults. While schools and early intervention programs often receive considerable funding for disability services, support tends to diminish once individuals reach adulthood, leaving them facing barriers to accessing education, employment, and even basic civic engagement.
"Libraries are important community hubs and vital resources, and it's critical that these spaces are accessible to everyone," McIntee emphasized. "We are proud to partner with the Cedar Rapids Public Library to make that a reality."
The specific adaptive technologies being considered include screen readers, voice recognition software, adjustable workstations, and large-print keyboards. The specialized furniture will encompass comfortable seating options designed for individuals with mobility limitations, as well as height-adjustable tables to accommodate wheelchair users. Perhaps most importantly, the staff training component will equip library personnel with the knowledge and skills to effectively assist patrons with a wide range of disabilities.
This donation comes at a time when public libraries are increasingly evolving into more than just book repositories. They are becoming community centers offering a diverse array of services, including computer access, job search assistance, literacy programs, and social gatherings. Ensuring these services are accessible to everyone is paramount.
The Cedar Rapids Public Library's commitment to accessibility extends beyond this donation. The new building itself incorporates numerous universal design features, such as automatic doors, ramps, accessible restrooms, and clear signage. However, the Variety funding will elevate these efforts, providing a level of specialized support that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
This initiative sets a precedent that other communities may soon follow. As the population ages and the prevalence of disability increases, the demand for accessible public spaces will only continue to grow. Variety's decision to invest in adult accessibility demonstrates a forward-thinking approach and a commitment to creating a more inclusive society for all.
The opening of the new Cedar Rapids Public Library in April promises to be a landmark event for the community, and this partnership between Variety and the library exemplifies a shared dedication to serving all residents, regardless of ability. The $50,000 investment isn't merely a financial contribution; it's a statement about the value of inclusivity and a commitment to empowering adults with disabilities to fully participate in community life.
